5-Minute AC Maintenance Check
Qatar's summer puts more strain on air conditioners than almost any climate on earth. A unit running at 45°C outdoor temperature is working at its absolute limit. These quick checks — most taking under 5 minutes — keep your AC efficient, extend its life, and prevent breakdown in the middle of July.

Filter Cleaning — The Most Important Habit
- Remove the indoor unit filter every two weeks during summer. In Qatar's dusty environment, filters clog far faster than any manufacturer's manual assumes.
- Wash the filter under running water, let it dry completely in the shade, then reinsert. Never use a wet filter — it causes mould to grow inside the unit.
- After any major sandstorm, clean the filter the next day regardless of when you last cleaned it. Sand particles are abrasive and damage the coil.
- If your AC makes a whistling or straining sound, a clogged filter is the most common cause. Check it before calling a technician.
Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
- Musty or mouldy smell when the AC starts: the drain pan or coil has mould. This spreads through your home — call a technician immediately.
- Water dripping from the indoor unit: the condensate drain pipe is blocked. This causes water damage to walls and ceilings very quickly.
- Ice forming on the indoor unit or refrigerant pipes: the unit is low on refrigerant or airflow is severely blocked. Switch off and call a technician.
- Unit runs but room does not cool: possible refrigerant leak. Do not ignore this — it worsens over time and eventually destroys the compressor.
- If the outdoor fan stops spinning while the compressor runs, switch off immediately. The compressor will overheat within minutes.
Annual Service — What to Ask For
- Book your annual service in March or early April before the heat arrives. Technicians are fully booked by May.
- A proper service includes: coil cleaning (indoor and outdoor), refrigerant level check, electrical connection check, drain pipe flush, and fan bearing lubrication.
- Ask the technician to clean the outdoor condenser fins. In Qatar's dusty environment these accumulate heavy sand that massively reduces efficiency.
- Ask for a written note of the refrigerant level. If it drops significantly by next year, you have a leak in the system.
- Do not swing the AC between maximum cold and high setpoints repeatedly — extreme cycling causes more wear than steady operation.
- Keep internal doors open between rooms you are cooling. Closing them creates pressure differences that strain the system.
- If going out for less than 2 hours, leaving the AC at 26°C is more efficient than switching it off and letting the room heat up completely.
